Preoperative Surgical Fitness Assessment for Predicting Outcomes in PDAC Patients

The PanSurf study is focused on determining the usefulness of preoperative surgical fitness assessment in predicting short-term surgical outcomes and long-term survival in pancreatic cancer patients undergoing major surgery. The traditional approach of using chronological age to predict post-operative outcomes has proven to be inadequate. Instead, physiological age and patients' frailty have been shown to be more accurate predictors of surgical outcomes, but their definitions are varied. To address this issue, we aim to use a combination of the stair climbing test, body composition analyzer, and grip strength test to assess patients' surgical fitness preoperatively.

Our study is a prospective national collaborative study in which we measure physiological age and frailty using preoperative tests such as the stair climbing test, body composition analyzer, and grip strength test and assessment how them can predict surgical short and long-term outcomes. This study aims to provide a more accurate prediction of surgical outcomes and improve patient outcomes. Our national collaborators are Hanna Seppänen and Hanna Belfrage from HUS and Saila Kauhanen from TYKS.
